INFORMATION ABOUT MURCIA
Where is Murcia
Murcia region is located at the South-East corner of the Iberian Peninsula, between the regions of, Andalusia, Castile-La Mancha and Valencia, the region of Murcia occupies an area of 11,317 km2 (2.2% of the total surface area of Spain), bordering the province of Albacete in the North, the province of Alicante in the East, the provinces of Granada, Albacete and Almería in the West, and the Mediterranean in the South-East.
Murcia
coastline is characterised by its sandy beaches. The most
beautiful natural wonder on the coast is the Mar Menor.
It is a shallow lagoon or pool, which is the largest of its kind in
Spain. The water in the lagoon is very salty and
maintains a hot temperature (5ºC above the average Mediterranean
temperature). It has four openings or passages that lead to the sea.
The mountainous scenery of the region is full of foothills that roll
in from the Penibetica and Subbetica ranges that help create the
Guadalentin river and Sangonera depressions. The most outstanding
part of the area is without doubt the Revolcadores massif, that
reaches an altitude of 2,027 metres. The El Caruche, Espuña, La Pila
and Ricote sierras are all over 1000 metres high. The rivers are
short and irregular, given the close proximity of the sierras to the
sea and the low rainfall. The most notable river in size and the
area it irrigates is the Segura. It enters the region from
Albacete, via Calasparra, and leaves the region heading
towards Alicante.

San Javier airport is an air base open to civil traffic, as
stipulated in Royal Decree 1167/1995 of 7 July on the use of
airdromes used jointly as an air base and an airport, and of air
bases open to civil traffic. Thus, the airport share runways with
the General Air Academy, where future Air
Force officials are trained.
Since 1996, San Javier airport has experienced
linear growth in passenger traffic and has consequently become a
fundamental node with regards holiday and leisure transport to and
from the Region of Murcia Spain.
During the years 2001, 2002 and 2003, it was one of the domestic
airports with the greatest growth; 39%, 44% and 77%,
respectively, some people said that Murcia will grow
like Malaga or

Murcia-San Javier airport has one main runway, the
05-23 (2,300 by 60 metres) as well as a parallel taxiway. At the
start of the 1990's, different work was undertaken in the airport to
equip it with a passenger terminal building of 3,500 square metres
to enable it to handle four flights simultaneously. The aircraft
parking platform measures 390 by 104 metres and can house two wide
fuselage aircraft or three with an average fuselage. There is also a
cargo terminal building of 530 square metres.
In June 2004, the terminal expansion, with an addition 1,100 square
metres in the arrivals area, was inaugurated. Two new baggage
reclaim carousels were installed, as well as office spaces for four
car hire companies and five shops. Due to the heavy traffic
increases in the past years and given the urgency with which the
passenger service improvements were required, the expansion was
added with prefabricated modules.
